What makes Madonna della Corona so special?
The pilgrimage church nestles seemingly seamlessly against a steep rock face and offers a breathtaking view of the valley below. The special architecture and seclusion make the place a unique destination – for pilgrims as well as nature and culture lovers.
The history of Madonna della Corona
The origins of the Madonna della Corona date back to the 12th century. Monks from the Abbey of San Zeno in Verona built a hermitage here to create a quiet place of prayer. In the 15th century, the first small church was built in the rock, which was extended and remodelled several times over the course of time. The sanctuary took on its current form in the 1970s after extensive renovation.
The spiritual significance of the shrine
Madonna della Corona has been a place of contemplation and prayer for centuries. Pilgrims come here to find peace and leave their worries behind. Numerous legends surround the church, including a tale according to which the statue of the Madonna miraculously arrived at this hard-to-reach place.
The name ‘Corona’ is not derived from the crown of the statues of the Virgin Mary, but rather from an old term for ‘rocks’ that surround the shrine. Masses are still held in the church every day.
