Castel Penede at Lake Garda

The ruins of the castle of Penede are in the small village of Nago, near Torbole and Arco. The castle towers on a rocky coast over Lake Garda. From here you can enjoy beautiful views of the lake and the valley of Santa Lucia to Torbole.

The Castle, probably dating back to Roman times, was first mentioned in 1210. Throughout its history, it has repeatedly fallen into the hands of various conquerors. Today it’s one of the most beautiful viewpoints on Lake Garda. Unfortunately, only a few unstable ruins remain of the castle of Penede, but it's getting renovated.

It once stood on the road that connected the Vallagarina with the Garda Trentino. Precisely because of this strategically important location, the castle was destroyed by French troops around 1700. The castle, confirmed by documents from the 17th century, served only military purposes, and had a keep, a watchtower, a Venetian bastion, a drawbridge, a bell room, a chapel and workshops. If you want to visit the castle Penede, you can come from the fortress Nago on a picturesque path to the ruins.
