Bike tour on the wine route at Sirmione
This leisurely bike ride through the wineries of Lugana along the Strada del Vino at Lake Garda is not just for wine lovers. You start and finish at the Sirmione peninsula. The total distance is 32 km, and it can be done in about 2.5 hours.
The starting point at the Sirmione peninsula leaves visitors astonished. It is one of the most famous places at Lake Garda with its moated castle of the Scaligeri, built directly on the lake. A boat ride across the lake to Sirmione is recommended, and tour boats offer convenient crossings from various locations. For those who prefer to travel by car, it is advisable to park at Colombare or Lugana, as the centre of Sirmione is often overcrowded.
The cycle path leads from Sirmione to San Martino della Battaglia, and you can see the tower of San Martino from far away. It was built in memory of the battle of 1859 where the victory over the Austro-Hungarian troops was a milestone in the Italian Revolutionary War. The trauma of the war inspired the founding of the International Red Cross. The tower serves as a guide for cyclists as well as a shady spot for a first break.
In San Martino della Battaglia is the beautiful estate Selva Capuzza. In addition to the famous white wine, olives and truffles grown here, there is an exceptional restaurant and the Agriturismo Borgo San Donino.
From the tower or country estate, you continue to the cosy town of Pozzolengo, then cycle back to the lake. Through the wineries, the path leads back to the shore in Punta Gro. Here you can take a swim before cycling back to the starting point in Sirmione. The bike path is accessible throughout the year.
