Garda By Bike - Cycling along Lake Garda

The Garda cycle path is one of the most spectacular and ambitious projects in Europe. The project kicked off in 2018, thanks in part to the allocation of European funds, and aimed to create a 140 km cycle path following the shores of Lake Garda, using old cycle paths and building new ones overlooking the lake.

Some sections of the "Ciclovia del Garda" have already been realised and are already practicable, while others are nearing completion. For other sections, however, due to logistical difficulties and resistance from owners and environmentalists, there have been delays in the work and changes to the route compared to the initial project. But a solution seems to have been found to finish the project in an alternative way.

Let's look at the various sections in detail

  • One of the most spectacular sections of the Ciclovia del Garda is undoubtedly the one between Limone and Riva del Garda, on the north-western shore. The finished 2 km section overlooking the lake is anchored to the cliff, but stops at the border between Lombardy and Trentino, 5 km from Riva del Garda. The missing section connecting Limone to the Strada del Ponale and Riva del Garda should be completed in 2026, despite technical challenges and high costs.
  • A new cycle path will connect Riva del Garda to Torbole, passing through the town and its harbours, with the improvement of existing roads such as Viale Rovereto. By 2025, the connection to Nago will also be completed.
  • Work on the connection between Torbole-Nago and Malcesine began as early as 2023 but has not yet been completed, while you can already cycle between Malcesine and Brenzone.
  • The connection between Brenzone and Torri del Benaco will have to wait until 2027, while work has begun on the construction of the cycle path between Torri del Benaco and Garda.
  • The connection between Garda and Peschiera is also planned for the end of 2025.
  • Work is also underway on the Lombardy side of the cycle path that will connect Sirmione, Desenzano del Garda, Salò and Gardone Riviera (skirting the lake only in some sections). From Gardone Riviera cyclists, instead of cycling, will take the ferry to Limone.
